OpenDev Technologies was founded in 2011 with a straightforward purpose: build technology that actually works for education and government institutions — not technology that was built for enterprises and poorly adapted to fit their needs.
Over the following decade, we worked with 20+ institutions across education and the public sector, across three countries. The work ranged from custom software projects to deep Moodle implementations — theming, plugin development, workflow automation, integrations. We learned what institutions actually need from the inside of real deployments, not from product research.
We learned something important from that body of work: the technology was rarely the hardest part. The hardest part was the gap between what institutions needed and what the available platforms were built to deliver. The compliance requirements that didn’t fit a US-hosted SaaS. The brand investment that disappeared the moment a student opened the LMS. The renewal conversation that grew more difficult each year as a vendor’s investors demanded returns.

The category needed to be rethought — not just improved.
The decision to build OpenDevX was not about building a better Moodle or a cheaper Canvas. It came from a more fundamental observation: the entire Learning Management System category was designed for a pre-AI world, and most vendors were iterating on that design rather than questioning it.
AI and machine learning are not features to be added to an existing LMS architecture. They change what is possible at the foundation — how lessons are generated, how learning is personalised, how institutions with limited connectivity or infrastructure can still deliver quality education. The platform needed to be designed around that possibility, not retrofitted for it.
That is what OpenDevX is. A platform built from 15 years of institutional knowledge, designed from the ground up for the era of AI-assisted learning, with data sovereignty and institutional ownership as non-negotiable architectural decisions — not add-ons.
We are still building it. School In A Box — our offline-first, on-device AI lesson generation engine — is in early access. We are developing it with institutions that want to shape what comes next, not wait for a finished product.
We did not stop doing Moodle work when we built OpenDevX.
Our Moodle expertise — customisation, theming, UI/UX overhaul, plugin development — remains a core part of what we offer. Not every institution needs or is ready for a fully managed sovereign platform. Some need their existing Moodle environment to work the way it should have from the start.
We are honest about which is the right fit for each institution. That honesty comes from 15 years of doing both.

OpenDev Technologies has been independent since 2011. No venture capital. No private equity. Our pricing is set to sustain a healthy business — not to satisfy a growth mandate from outside.
